Understanding Volatility
Volatility (or variance) describes how a game's payouts are distributed. Low volatility games pay small amounts frequently. High volatility games pay large amounts rarely. Both can have the same RTP, but the experience is very different.
Bankroll Sizing
Your bankroll should match the volatility of your chosen games. For high volatility slots, you need at least 200-300x your bet size to have a reasonable session. For low volatility games, 50-100x is usually sufficient.
Session Planning
Decide your session budget before playing. For high volatility: expect many losing spins with occasional big wins. For low volatility: expect steady play with smaller fluctuations. Neither is better — it depends on your preference and budget.
The Math Behind Variance
Standard deviation measures how much individual results deviate from the expected (RTP) value. High volatility games have higher standard deviation, meaning more extreme results in both directions. Understanding this helps set realistic expectations.
